The Product Portfolio of Windows® Essential Server Solutions (WESS) is an integrated and affordable family of products designed for small and midsize businesses. Windows® Small Business Server (SBS) is available in Standard and Premium editions and is designed for businesses with between 5 and 75 users while Windows® Essential Business Server (EBS) is available in Standard and Premium editions and is designed for businesses with between 25 and 300 users.
The former, Small Business Server (SBS) is available through all channels including Retail and Volume Licensing (Open and Open Value Programmes) and attached to Hardware through an OEM. Client Access Licenses (CALs) are attached to the Server license as a pack of five. Incremental CALs can be acquired singularly or in packs of five and twenty.
The latter, Windows Essential Business Server (EBS) is not available as a Retail product. However both editions are available with the Hardware from an OEM Manufacturer and Volume Licensing with attached and incremental CAL Packs available.
Standard Edition is purchased on a Server and User or Per Device CAL Model. External Users are covered by a User CAL Suite. The Premium Edition uses the same model, however, users that access SQL Server functionality need the Premium CAL Suite.
The Standard Edition of Windows Server 2008 is 64Bit. Where as the Premium Edition license can be applied to both 32bit and 64bit. Secondly, the SQL License to comes with Small Business Server 2008 Premium can only be used in this environment.
If acquired under the Microsoft Open Value programme, it is possible to ‘step up’ from SBS Standard to Premium. This is applicable to both the Server and the CAL Suites. Secondly, If the Microsoft Software Assurance (SA) benefits package was acquired, SBS2003 wil include new version rights and Office Outlook 2007. If Microsoft Software Assurance (SA) was acquired for Premium Edition; ISA (Internet Secuirty and Acceleration) 2006 and SharePoint Designer 2007.
Small Business Server 2008
Standard Edition Includes Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition / Microsoft Exchange 2007 Stanard Edition / SBS Admin Console all on the one box.
Premium Edition Includes Windows Server 2008 Standard / Exchange 2007 / Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Standard Edition all on one or two boxes.
Essential Business Server 2008
Standard Edition can be deployed on up to Three Servers and includes Three Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition. Microsoft System Center Essentials 2007 and Exchange Server Standard 2007. Forefront (1 Year) is also thrown in with Forefront THreat Management Gateway (TMG) Medium Business Edition (1 Year).
Premium can be deployed on Four Servers, In addition SQL Server 2008 Standard Edition. This supports up to 300 user or device connections.
